Hotel and Pub Insurance has traditionally been a very limited market for publicans and business owners alike and a costly overhead due to limited insurers. Oliver Whittingham, hotel insurance broker and co-director of Matrix Insurance Group, has listened closely to the needs of hotel and pub operators around the country and is able to provide a comprehensive insurance package at competitive premiums.
The key for publicans is to choose a broker completely independent of any scheme arrangement, this allows more competition from the available insurers and ultimately drives down premiums, giving you a better deal in the long term.
Many country pubs are large federation style hotels. If you are responsible for insuring the building then it is very important to insure for the full replacement value of the building. We generally recommend having a building replacement valuation done to ensure that you are insuring the building and contents for the correct amount. Nearly all insurance policies have whats called a ‘Co-insurance clause or Average Clause’. This means that if you under-insure you may not receive full compensation in the event of a loss occurring.
Another tip for publicans is to split their turnover between bar sales, food, bottleshop, gaming and accommodation. If you don’t split your turnover, the insurance company will generally lump it all under bar sales and you might be paying more than you should for public liability insurance.
With easy monthly payment options available, unrivalled personal service and expert and independent advice, Matrix Insurance Group are raising the bar for Hotel and Pub Insurance across Australia.
